NATIONAL TAXPAYERS WELFARE FOUNDATION
The wait for an income tax refund can be frustrating. If you’re among those who haven’t yet received your refund for the current assessment year, you're not alone—and this update is especially for you.

According to the Taxpayers’ Charter, the Income Tax Department is committed to publishing service delivery standards and sharing periodic updates on their performance. The latest available data for April 2025 reveals a significant backlog in refund processing:
As on 1st April 2025: 25,13,310 refund claims were pending.
As on 30th April 2025: 23,17,232 claims were still pending.
Shockingly, out of this, 23,00,285 cases were pending for more than 90 days.
Why Are Refunds Getting Delayed?
Two major reasons have been identified for this high pendency:
Lack of response from taxpayers to communications from the Centralized Processing Centre (CPC).
Technical reasons, which are generally beyond the taxpayer’s control
Let’s explore what you can do about each:
1. If It’s a Technical Reason
In these cases, the delay is on the Department’s end. Your only option here is to raise a grievance through the e-filing portal, requesting the Department to expedite the refund process. Unfortunately, you may have limited control beyond this.
2. If You’ve Missed a Communication from the CPC
This is where many delays could be avoided. The CPC often sends emails or notifications seeking clarification or additional details to process your refund. Failing to respond in time can:
Delay the refund indefinitely,
Lead to partial refunds (less than what you claimed), or
Even result in a tax demand notice, based on assumptions due to your non-response.
What You Should Do
Here’s how to stay on top of things and avoid delays:
Monitor your email inbox – especially the email ID you used when filing your return.
Log in to the income tax e-filing portal regularly and check for messages or pending actions.
Respond promptly to any notices or queries raised by the CPC.
Being proactive helps ensure that your refund is processed faster and accurately.
Final Word
At the National Taxpayers Welfare Foundation, we believe that awareness is the first step towards empowerment. By simply staying alert and responsive, you can avoid unnecessary delays and receive what is rightfully yours—your refund.
If you’ve filed your return and are still waiting, now’s the time to check your portal and inbox. Don’t let a missed email cost you peace of mind.
